This guide will cover:

  • How to draw on a PDF in Drawboard PDF

When would I need to draw on a PDF?

  • To show, or draw attention to a part of the PDF document
  • To add edits on a document
  • To make illustrations and diagrams that add further context to your PDF document
  • To write notes in hand-drawn text
  • To sign a PDF document with freeform inking.

Drawboard PDF has all the free essential tools you need to make PDF note taking easier:

  • Shapes (ellipse/circle, square, polygon)
  • Lines (straight, drawn, dotted)
  • Pen (pencil, marker)

To annotate a PDF

  1. Check that the tool you want to use is in the toolbar.
  2. To add a tool to the Toolbar, open the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the toolbar, browse to the tool required, and click the add ‘+’ icon, or drag the tool into a space on the toolbar.
  3. Once the tool is in the Toolbar, you can either use it immediately or you can configure the tool to change the color, stroke thickness, or in some cases other properties such as fill or line type.
  4. Navigate to the part of the document you want to draw or annotate.
  5. If you're using a touchscreen and want to draw with your finger, then you need to toggle Touch to Annotate on the Toolbar in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  6. Press the cursor, your finger or pen onto the screen while the tool is selected to start drawing.
  7. Keep in mind that each stroke or annotation is a single step in the undo/redo process. If you want to undo you’ll find a button pointing left/back for undo and right/forward to redo. An annotation can also be selected (change the tool to select first) and deleted or moved around the screen.

Tip: When you're using an active pen (a stylus with a battery is usually active) in Drawboard PDF your ink will pressure sensitive (pressing lightly will give you a thinner line and a firmer press will give you a thicker line).
