Now used throughout the company, this software has enabled greater online interaction with teams and external partners. The ability to centralize markups on one PDF, instead of numerous printed pages, has resulted in more efficient and cohesive ways of working.
“Having a single place to collect, review and then be able to cycle through people’s comments has been really useful and has really helped us streamline our design process” - Tom Barton, Associate
London based architecture firm Barr Gazetas creates functional, sustainable and productive spaces, with a focus on transformation. While it was a client request for a more virtually interactive process which led them to Drawboard Projects, the company had already been experiencing pressure on their physical meeting spaces. Before Drawboard Projects was implemented, Tom explains “We'd actually meet each other far less pre COVID-19; it was less regular face to face paper based decision making”.
When the team began working from home during COVID-19, the need for greater functionality in their software became evident.
“Not having a piece of paper in front of us was causing a lot of difficulty in progressing projects - we needed a whiteboard tool. So that was the catalyst - to bring project teams together more in sketching and annotating each other’s work”.
Although the company was already using other markup software, it wasn’t solving all of their issues. “It was difficult to collaborate internally, make decisions and push designs forward with the tools available to us while working from home; they had limitations and were clunky to use”.

Tom Barton, Associate at Barr Gazetas
Using Drawboard Projects as their meeting tool during COVID-19, Barr Gazetas experienced increased productivity as the software enabled large numbers of people to work on one project simultaneously.
“Drawboard helps us to collaborate with clients and explain design decisions remotely while we can't sit around a table and sketch. It’s been brilliant, especially for all of our bigger projects”.
On top of this, the Barr Gazetas team were able to work more cohesively on a single virtual drawing set, and collaborate more effectively with external consultants. “We really like the fact we can upload the PDFs and interact with them, instead of having to send them out and check individual markups. The tools where you can overlay consultants drawings and integrate through overlays is really useful, and being able to issue a full marked up set of drawings is great”.
A huge advantage for all members of the Barr Gazetas team was the versatility of Drawboard Projects. Studio Manager Gemma Jachnik explains “there’s different ways of using the software depending on your device and style of working. You didn’t get that with our previous platform. Now everyone can interact with Drawboard how they like to interact with it, and that’s a really positive thing”.
Drawboard has been used as a company communication tool, and also impacted team members who aren’t directly involved in the design process.
“It’s used throughout the company now. I’m not working on design projects but I use it within my work - managing things behind the scenes and marking up presentations. I also put more up for comment than I did before as it’s so much easier to get feedback now”.
Rolling out Drawboard Projects was a straightforward process for the Barr Gazetas team, and proved to be a popular change throughout the company. Tom explains, “everyone bought into it. It made my job a lot easier, as I was overseeing a few different teams. Our MD really likes it - we now operate every project on Drawboard”.
For Gemma, the ease of use was clearly demonstrated when introducing Drawboard Projects to other team members. “It’s very intuitive. We have grown during the past year and our new starters have picked it up really quickly”.
While Drawboard Projects enabled a far more efficient way of working remotely during COVID-19, the team see huge benefits in making the software permanent.
